fine art portraits of pets and the people who love them
There is an undeniable quality to a well-crafted black-and-white photo that is not matched by any other medium. Black and white images transcend our everyday experiences and become something more mystical and universal.
People always ask me, "What's the difference between a portrait and just a great snapshot?" The answer is something I've come to understand more fully over time.
A snapshot captures a moment in time. It anchors a person in a place. They are fun to look at and they bring back memories about that time and place.
A portrait, on the other hand, is more mysterious. It's more like a painting in that you can look at it longer. It draws you in and you can see something different each time you view it.
Portraits don't happen by accident.
I'm not hoping to get lucky and capture a split-second moment. Preparation, experience, and patience--along with creating a relationship during our time together--enable me to capture more than someone's likeness.
Why Black and White?
When I opened my studio twenty-one years ago, much of my inspiration came from the black and white photographs I was creating in my darkroom.
There is often an emotional response to black-and-white photographs. They tend to have a certain mood or atmosphere that often eludes a color shot of the same subject.
The best black-and-white images have an evocative, emotional quality that is difficult to define but impossible to deny.
In some way, there is a greater truth and spiritual dimension to
well-crafted black and white images.
